350 with L98 Corvette Heads and Hooker Comp Headers, spark plugs?!?!?!?

Okay I have an '89 Iroc 350, with corvette L98 Aluminum heads, and Hooker Comp Headers, I was working on it today, trying to get the little qwirks it has fixed, and I pulled the plugs to take a look. They are close to shot. Now it had Accel 0576S shorty plugs in it. But I keep hearing really bad things about those plugs. I already had to grind down a socket about 1/3" to even get the plugs out, they are really pushing close on the headers. Infact on one plug I had to unscrew the terminal because I couldn't get the socket on it still!

Anyone have any advice on plugs for this setup, its a little rough even getting them in, and I don't think I can fit the factory style plugs. And I know about jack about plugs, and what temps they need to run and all that. I tried Accel's cross reference books, but that just lead me to standard plugs, not short ones.

Is there another plug to look at, or should I just stick with those?

Same heads and Hooker Comp headers for a 1st gen, I am using the Autolite 3924 plug's. These are 3/4" reach, 5/8" hex, flat gasket seat.

A 5/8" offset box wrench cut in half also helps with install/uninstall of the plugs.

I have the same heads and headers.... Get rid of those god forsaken piece of crap plugs. Good ol ac delcos will do the trick... normal length plugs work fine.

I could barely get the shorties out, I had to remove the tips for the extra 1/8" clearance...

I'm getting ready to put the 2055's on my '88. I bought these sockets from Hawks just in case. I also bought the accel "shorties" but am glad to hear that the std ac delco's work too.

I looked at it again, I think if I pickup that socket I should be able to fit a standard plug in there hopefully...

Now I'm curious my in depth technical knowledge of motors is pretty limited.

I drive my car decently hard, and like to bring it to the track on occasion and run some laps.

What would be a good plug for this car, and temperature wise? I know I can switch temperature rated plugs till I get it right, but I would rather pretty much get the correct ones up front. I am guessing a stock temp range plug would work fine for what I do.

What ac-delco's are the correct plug, also ngk make any good plugs for it?
I can x-reference it also as long as I have the delco number. But honestly I don't know what year those aluminum heads are so finding the stock plug is next to impossible for me.

Also just curious because you guys seem to have the same setup about how much power should I be putting out?
I want to get it up around 400 or so to the wheels, I think thats more than enough for me. Dang third gens scare the **** out of me, they just don't feel as stable as 4th gens. But thats what keeps me being careful.

You need no special socket, 5/8" plug socket and a 3/4" wrench. It is all you need.

to heck with the special socket, i had a machinist cut down a standards 5/8 spakplug socket for me. after i did this, then summitt started advertising it(ormaybe it was just the first time i noticed it) been using the same socket for 3 years now. rapidfire plugs and hooker headers(2055's)

Not sure of the exact model of the headers, and I didn't pay attention to the heads. I'll take a look and see if I can find out tomorrow hopefully if its a little warmer outside, I have to find something that was leaking earlier today anyways...

Well its time to bring the car back out and I want to switch out my plugs/wires.. Now just curious what kinda plugs should I be running obviously I have been told by 100+ people that the Accel shorties are NOT the way to go. And that standard plugs will go with a socket cut back further than mine already is.. But anyways, what AC-Delco's are compatible?

I really don't know what to look for.. If not Ac-Delco, I have always like NGK also but I can always look up the x-reference, either way it needs to get done this weekend I'm bored and need to toy again.

I am guessing I should be looking at-
41-817 -ac-delco platinums .35
41-629 -ac-delco standards .35
R43TS -ac-delco standards .35

The NGK I would buy if it would be a good idea-
FR4GP -ngk g-power platinum .35

Should I get platinums or would standards be better? I don't have much of a cam, and its a pretty basic built 350 internally, guy that sold it to me said its a little under 350 at the crank.

The only significant advantage of platinum or iridium plugs is that they can (potentially) last quite a bit longer than basic copper plugs. They won't give you any more power or better gas mileage, or anything like that.

I know this is an old thread. But I was wondering what plugs did you end up going with? I got a 350 5.7 that came out of an 88 IROC with Corvette aluminum heads with angular plugs. Right now it just doesn't run right and I think the plugs have something to do with it along with the exhaust. Everything on the motor is stock except for the heads.

I ended up using the NGK FR4GP, they worked great, owned the car for another 35k miles after installing them.
