Smog parts
Smog parts
Hi,
I just bought 92 Camaro RS convrt. and would like to put long tube headers on with a cat.& 3'' cat back. Can I take off all the air injection & air pump stuff and pass emission testing. I live in Massachusetts, I ask this because I own a 96 Impala SS and it was ok to remove all the air injection & pump by law. I know with the 96 they test by plugging into the port under the dash, but with the 92 they will test with the sniffer & run the car.
Sorry for the long post, hope it makes sense.
Thanks,
Alan

if it is legal to remove it from a '96, i am sure it's legal to remove it from a '91. but, are you SURE that it was legal? what i'm trying to say is this: did somebody tell you that (like the mechanic/shop/etc.), or did your Impala just pass and you are assuming that it's legal cause you didnt get snagged??
i'm from new york (i think we're a little tougher...ok, maybe a lot tougher), but i still think it's a little strange that an OBDII car would pass with the smog stuff removed. maybe the inspector just didnt know it was supposed to be there? i don't know - i'm just trying to cover all the bases..

its illegal to remove any emissions components from any car that will be used on the street in any state.
if it passes or not depends on what the inspector looks for, what the standards are, & how good the motor runs.
on the 96, i believe some came from the factory without AIR injection, but i may be wrong.
most OBD2 systems look for the AIR injection if they were equipped with it, is the engine light on?

With the Impala I had a bad air pump, not working , engine light on. I took it to the dealer and was told it was no longer needed, tech cleared code, unhooked air pump & put a sticker on the engine bay stating air pump not needed for inspection. Mass. inspection is just as tough as New York,I am pretty sure (same)

well i can tell you if its done by sniffer and they dont look under the hood you should be fine that smog pump and air tubes does nothing. As long as you got a good cat your good to go. Here in va i go to the dealership with an really old guy doing the checks i pass everytime with no smog pipe through cat stealthram headers tb coolant delete. You can tell my car has no smog my car is also to loud. I pass becuase he only checks lights wipers horn and makes sure the wheel bearings are tierods are good. Ive never been sniffed and when they start ill get my cavy to pass take the sticker off and put it on the iroc then get the cavy inspected somewhere else again.
Just found this sticky thread:" New to TBI check this out" *updated*. I think this will help answer alot of my questions. This site is loaded with good info. Thanks for the replys, this is a really nice forum.

1BADROC, i don't how how they are where your at, but here in Texas that would be called a fictitious sticker. if you get stopped they may run the sticker number along with your tag number, if they don't match, its worse than not having a current sticker & they may take you to jail for it.
