whats involved with changing motor mounts?

You have got to be kidding me!...I have to remove my front springs just to change the motor mounts? why? I havent gotten up under the front cross member to see but from the top I can see the 3 bolts holding the clamshell on....dont I just remove those bolts and pull the clam off and change out the mount?

what all is involved with changing motor mounts?

What motor, what year car? 3 bolts sounds like you have a small block. to remove the frame pads (which is what youre referring to), unbolt the big bolt and nut that is holding your motor mount to the frame pad. Do this on both sides. If you have a engine hoist use it to elevate the engine to free up those two bolts so you can pull them out. IF not, just use a floor jack, put a peice of wood on it, and jack up somewhere in front of the engine, (harmonic balancer, crank pulley, or even the very front of the oil pan) and get those bolts out. Then raise the engine up untill the tranny bellhousing just touches the tranny hump on the body, this should give you enough room to unbolt the clamshell. Just make sure you mark the holes or something so you know where they went. Then replace the bolts and clamshell, and youre set. Good luck

not sure what you are talking about....

To remove and replace the motor mounts you need to remove the 3 bolts and nuts on the mount itself. Yes you will have to jack the engine up or use a cherry picker to lift the clamshell up enough to remove it.

Use "can" take the springs out and drop the A' Arm which is what I recommend. Or between the A-arm and k-member you can slip in some extensions, universals and alot of choice cuss words and get it that way.
(in fact I did it this way.... takes an hour) but it is exhausting and super fusterating. (however I had no engine in at the time)

You will be okay, alot of people have done it, and yes it is difficult.

Yea, some people say it's not too bad (ha! I wonder what those guys consider a hard job!), but with the right combo of extensions and swivels it's doable. An extra set of hands would help.

I did mine with motor out, so it wasn't too big of a deal to remove the a-arms, or at least remove the front springs. I was replacing the front springs anyway, so a good chance to do them...
You can do poly a-arm bushings, springs, and new ball joints if you want to do it all at once, then never have to worry about that again.
I also did factory motor mounts. They come with new clam shells, so that's nice. poly ones you have to put into your old clamshells... anywhoo...
