Camshaft question??

Just curious...If I were to get a new camshaft would i have to get new valves and valve springs and possibly a higher valve cover to accept the valves opening more?...also how much do you think I would pay for a decent camshaft??...thx

You shouldn't need new valves. With the new cam you will need new lifters (unless you have roller lifters). Depending on the cam specs you may need new valve springs to avoid valve float. The cam provider can tell you that. I know Crane & Comp have kits, cam, lifters, springs. Fairly cheap. You shouldn't need new valve covers. Usually only needed when you start changing rocker arms.

I would replace the springs, retainers, and maybe keepers as well with a new camshaft. Factory crap is heavy (on the valvetrain) and the springs are weak at best.

Cam price depends a lot on what type of cam you're getting.

You'll want to replace the valve springs with high perf stock diameter replacement spring when swapping to a aftermarket cam. Keep the valve lift under .510" for near stock motor. a spring like Lunati # 73943 covers most street hyd flat tappet applications. drop on installation
.450" is plenty.
To get an idea of what you should be paying for a new performance cam+ lifters and springs search Summit Racing

Allow for shipping To NFLD from OHIO , broker fee and CAN/US $ currency conversion. if you're shopping locally in NFLD or NB/NS allow for some retailer markup. Now your armed with the cam price knowledge to get a competitive price. I've found Canadian performance parts retailers to be generally $way over priced$. Summit, Jegs and others will ship to your door from the US. Specify "US Mail delivery".

Amotion cams in BC is competitive. will ship nation wide (Canada Post) Call or email for pricing. Accelerated Motion Performance Products
