Why Do I have 4 Oil Rings???
On my Weisco pistons I pulled I have four oil control rings but I've never seen four rings before. I have the top and bottom flimsy rings and the oil spacer ring but also on the very bottom another thicker ring that I can't remove.
I've only seen three oil rings before, can someone explain the difference?
Are they specific to the pistons?
Is there any advantage with them?
TIA

Typically those are needed in 383 engines when people use longer rods. I believe they are called oil support rings or something. Basically when the rods extend into the ring lands they need to add those because the other rings are too filmsy or weak. Make sure ya use em...

you are correct sir. i have the very same wiseco pistons and you need those supports for the oil rings when you run a 6.0 rod. the piston you are running is specific and special to this particular combination/application.

Thank you very much! I never knew that, if you try you can learn something new every day.
I'm assuming my new ring set will only come with three oil rings total so I should leave these on the pistons?
