Fuel line trouble

Hi everyone! I tried to change the fuel filter on my 86 firebird v6 (fuel injection) As I wrestled with getting the fuel filter out, the line wasnt stable and I noticed the fuel lines were rusted and in crappy condition. On one line, there was fuel leaking out slowly. I started to smell fuel and bailed quickly. Then I let the fuel pump run to see if the leak was bad, and it sprayed out like there was no tomorrow. The fuel filter and lines are original. I didnt even bother continuing on change the filter...What kind of tubes would you recommend me getting to replace the current ones? How should I tackle this? Thanks for any suggestions.

Your options are going to be determined largely by the condition of the fuel lines. If you can access a clean and relatively undamaged portion of the line, you could adapt to it with a sleeve/nut compression type fitting. If the line is similarly eroded along its entire length, start shopping for steel tubing, and bender, and a flare set.

Alright, how about aluminum lines? Also, if I have to change the whole line, I would have to remove the tank, right? Thats going to be a pain to take down the rear end...is it doable with jackstands?

Changing the entire line set would require removal of the fuel tank. It can be done with the vehicle on stands. It's not a lot of fun no matter how it's done. Stainless would be better than aluminum. If you don't want to bend your own lines, you can find replacements:

Dropping the rear is not too bad. You can leave the driveshaft and torque arm connected. unhook panhard bars shocks and suspension links. I dropped mine the other day in like an hour and a half with no help. Oh and I had to chop my exhaust out which doesn't matter to me cause I'm going with new exhaust anyway.
