I have this head, heres what they are about..
If its not a perf. head. why do i run 9.3's in the 1/8th mile at 72mph? Ive been told 9.3's is pretty freakin good for a N/A stock like street car.. I have stock exhaust with no cat 2 1/4 single pipe all the way to the muffler.. which is a single to dual type.. i get 23-25 mpg everywhere..

65.3cc COMBUSTION CHAMBER
1.94" INTAKE 1.50" EXHAUST VALVE
"THIS CYLINDER HEAD IS NOT A PERFORMANCE ORIENTED CYLINDER HEAD. IT IS CLASSIFIED AS A HIGH SWIRL HEAD THAT WAS INTENDED FOR GOOD BOTTOM END TORQUE AND FUEL ECONOMY. THE INTAKE RUNNER IS RESTRICTIVE BECCAUSE IT HAS A RAMP CAST INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL TO PROMOTE HIGH SWIRL."

If you wanted to build an engine with diesel like torque that redlines at 4500 or so, you could use those heads on a 383 with the right cam and a tpi. You'd have a decent truck engine with all sorts of bottom end. Most guys here don't want stump pulling power though. High performance can be a relative thing. If lugging an engine and shifting at 4000rpm means hi performance then those heads might be considered hi performance.

I agree, I don't know why people HATE them so much. They are not the reason that the TBI engines are slow. I have hit high 10s in the 1/8 with a 5,500 lbs 1991 G20 Van with the stock Roller cam 350 TBI engine, with stock 193 heads on it, using the stock intake and stock sized ultimate TBI moded TBI. Stock converter, stock sized 235/75/R15 tires, and stock 3.42:1 Govlock rear end. FWIW, I make power to and shift at 5,000 with the stock cam, stock heads, stock intake, stock cast iron exhaust manifolds, stock Y-pipe.

I'm guessing he's talking about the 193 heads... on a 350 then?

how heavy is your CAMARO hiperf_chevyman?
Anyone know the ballpark conversion of that 1/8->1/4 mile time slip?

And finally - Were you asking a question, or was that just a statement?

Depending on the 60', 9.3 is good for mid-high 14s. 72 mph would continue on to about 93-95 mph or so.

Edit- here is a calculator.

It says 14.601 @ 91.44

huh.. so my camaro is a stump puller.. lets say i make most of my torque at 1800rpm, i have 2;73's, with a 2200 stall convertor.. what do you think of that combo? should i get a lower stall convertor?? would headers help these type heads?

Thanks in advance, Nick Hall

If you really wanted to optomize your combo for low rpm power there are numerous things that can be done.
As a rule a well tuned low rpm engine will get good fuel economy both in town and on the fwy, as opposed to higher rpm engines which do okay on the fwy but suffer around town.
I'm sure there are exceptions to that, so don't beat me up over it if you have a car that redlines at 7000 and gets 20 mpg in town.
The factory L98 is an example of an engine that's tuned for low end power and fuel economy around town. Some 1-5/8" long tube headers can improve the performance of that.
Higher gearing might help your economy, but your 1/8mi times would probably suffer then, and it's already geared plenty high. Same with a lower stall converter.
Although I remember reading an article entitled Project Econo Performer in the early '80s where they built a '70 Monte Carlo with a 350 with 3.08s and a low stall converter that got 26 mpg hwy and ran in the 13s. That was before 700R4s came along though.
It seems like your car is doing pretty well as is. Unless you want to get fanatical about it, the money you spend to optomize it would go further if you just spend it on gas.
Just get some headers for starters, if you don't have them already, and keep it tuned up.
