4 cylinder camaro engine for dirt track ????

i have a 1972 vega and am going to run in the 4cyl class at our local stock car track. i am wondering what chevy 4 cyl would be a good starting point. most run ford but engine should match make. i must run carb and must pull 15lbs vacuum at 1800rpm. any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
I suggest you talk to a few of the people in that class that run GM bodies and find out why they're running the 2300 instead of any of the GM ones, BEFORE wasting a whole bunch of time money and effort just to get whipped.

I can tell you why; but I think it'll have more effect if you hear it right straight from the people with the BTDT.

The 2300 is a good engine to use, parts are plently and you can get 140hp out of them fairly easy with all the aftermarket goodies avalible and still maintain good street drivability. Funny thinking 140hp and drivability issues, I wish I had the Pinto still.

The toyota 22R might be a good one to use as 85 mentioned. It's definatly not a half a Hemi but being a DOHC it has advanages. If you were to use the 22R as a platform you could dig up a FI head which would raise the compression up quite a bit and get either the toyota FI to carb intake or one of the aftermarket off road setups without all the BS on it and really have a screaming little beast.
