cam choice
hey all
looking into getting a new cam a lifters. i wanted to go with somethign with a power ban around 2000 to 5000 so i can still get some gas milage and get some power. now i was wondering what kinds of cams are out there for me to use. i want something really agresive with an agresive idle
now for the questions.. will i blow up my engine if i go to extrime? what is the worst that can happen if its to agresive for the engine?

If it's too aggressive for the engine then it might have a lopey idle and burn up gas like there's no tomorrow. But it won't blow anything up. Unless the valves start contacting the pistons (that's the result of too much lift)...
Call up some cam companies. They can help you for sure. I'd recommend Comp Cams. Don't forget to get new valve springs too.

I really can't recommend a cam. Just call up a few cam companies, give the specs of your engine and drivetrain, what you want from the cam, and they should be able to help.
As for the heads...You'll need new valve springs to match the new cam (ask the cam companies about that too). Some new rocker arms may be nice. 1.5:1 rocker arms should do you just fine. And you might as well replace the valve seals while you're in there.

Get a Comp Xtreme Energy 25x with appropriate valve springs. Get the factory roller lifter version, you won't need to replace the lifters. It'll improve power, won't hurt fuel economy excessively, and have a good idle sound (notice I didn't say "lopy"). Besides, lopy idle and TPI don't play well together.

Here, I looked one up for you : - summitracing.com
A little more duration than I said, but in the RPM range you need. Click on "suggested parts" for the springs. The retainers wouldn't be a bad idea either. Ditto on the rockers.
Like I already said, you don't need new lifters as long as yours haven't been abused or neglected.

Dang, the link didn't work.

yea i think im going to go with the comp cams xtream energy for the upgraded tpi. i have mnost of those parts that they suggested, jsut not on the car yet. i was saving them for winter. no i jsut need to find a set of vortec heads. i ehar tehy are really good. heads and a TC, something around 2000-3000 stall and full lock up for the od. then my setup will be good. thx for the help

you said i wont have to replace my lifters... dont you always need them when you put in a new cam? i herd you should because your lifters and your cam creat a wear patern so if you dont you will destroy both lifters and cam?
