Chokes above 3 grand RPM

I put a new alternator on my 305 and changed the oil. I go to drive to work and it seems to "choke" as soon as i put any kind of gas into it.

If I rev it up in park or nuetral, its fine.

Once i put it into drive, anything above 2500 rpm it chokes out
It smells strongly of gas sometimes too.

What could it be? Ign. control module? Coil?

Wires plugs cap and rotor are new.

Yes 4 bbl cc-qjet

Thats a good idea, I would have never thought of that. The choke light is always on but I never paid attention to it because it started fine.

What I have noticed though, is that it only does it at the start of the day, and once it warms up its fine, but it will barely go above 3 grand RPM until it warms up. I'm going to check on the choke.

Cap, Rotor, Wires, Ign. control module (7 pin), and plugs are all new, as is the carburetor (cc-qjet), so I'm kind of stumped, and pissed.

If the choke light is on, that means your alternator isn't working. Either the alternator is a dud, or the belt is toast. Check that. Without power from the alternator, nothing will work properly on the car, carburetor included.

Check that out while you check the choke to see if its operating as it should.

Double check the alternator is putting out!

You wouldnt be the first person to get a new dud!!!

Other than that, just double check all wiring is in proper order. It could be something as stupid as a bit of corrosion on the charging wire from the alternator.

You could also have a blown fuse for the choke/fan. That will set the "choke" light off as well. Check the fuse box.

Probe the choke-stat and make sure it's getting ~14 volts. I'm betting it is since you just replaced the alt.

Thats a hell of an idea, never thought to check the fuses lol.

The voltage kind of hovers, i wire brushed off the connections before putting on the alt and the belt is definately tight. At idle sometimes its at 13, or barely under, but "most" of the time its 14.4 like normal. It barely did it this morning so I'm wondering if it maybe was fuel ? Not sure, dam my car and its weird inconsistent problems.

Is the choke itself opening? Whats the voltage at the battery while the car is running?
