I have an opportunity to purchase a 350 4 bolt main (block only) for $50.00. According to the seller, the casting implies that it is a 1968 block. He is not sure what it is from. Are all 350's universal? Would that work in a 92 Z28? I have the roller set-up and plan (eventually) to go w/a stroker kit. What should I look for, and where do I look for problems on those blocks (such as cracks) to justify it as scrap or not? Also, is there a way to determine if it has been bored out or not? He is un-sure. Thanks for your help in advance!!

If the engine is complete, take off a head and measure the bore diameter with a GOOD quality caliper. Also use your fingernail to feel how thick the rig is at the top of the bore. It is always better to start with a complete engine. That way you can tell a lot about it's condition when you take it apart. If it is just a block there may be a reason it isn't in use.

As far as cracks, you really need to have a machine shop magnaflux it! I'd make the purchase dependent on the results from a machine shop inspection. Negotiate a deal....

Good luck
