Don't expect it to last.
It really depends on what kind of condition they are in. The biggest parts cost in any rebuild is the bearings. I'd never put old bearings back into an engine.
If you're doing a cheap rebuild, you won't even need to take the crank out. Pull the rods and pistons, put new rings on and slap them back in.
A rebuild like that may last a year or 2 if you're lucky. Spend the money and do it properly the first time. The only way you could reuse the old bearings is if you were to mike everything to check all the clearances. If the bearings looked ok and clearances were within the tolerances then they possibly could be reused. I really doubt you will have the tools to do those kind of checks.

oh, yes, red-neck is censored... Not that it needs to be in your case, if you feel comfortable calling yourself that, by all means...
No, the bearings should never be re-used. They're kinda pricey up here, but summit brand bearings are about $12 a set, even with all the fees tacked on and border charges, its still half the price of buying them locally.
You can also get a full on gasket set (at least for SBC) for $30, **which includes head gaskets**. No idea how they can charge that little for it, since head gaskets are $50 per side up here.... Shrug, worth mentioning at least.
You know all that is involved in a big block swap into your 3rd gen?

Just tell them to go look at the pictures on my web site. My 540 fits although my car can never be street legal again.

Build the bottom end right the first time and it WILL cost you less in the end.

if i got one of those rebuild kits from summit with the stock sized main and rod bearings, do i still have to get the crank and rods machined?

Get the crank checked first, have it ground if needed, then get a kit with the proper sized bearings for the crank you got back.
