rocker and timing question. Please help

rocker and timing question. Please help
Ok.
So I have an 84 Camaro with 81 olds 5.0l block and chev L69 heads on it.
When I bought the car it had a scrap chev block in it, but the heads were good. In my garage I had this Olds block with no heads. So I put the Chev heads on my Olds block and this is what I have.
My question is:
I need to set my valve lash because the rockers had to be installed. I want to do this with engine off.
Looking at the engine from the front, which valve is intake and which is exhaust.
Second question:
On this Olds block the timing is to be set at 14 deg. Does anyone out there know the reason for this. Anything over 8 seems a bit much for me.
