Speedo cable or sensor?

My speedometer stopped working on my 1991 Camaro RS V6, the odometer stopped also. Do I need to replace the speedometer cable or the speed sensor or both??

I beleive everything 90-up used a VSS in the tranny and the ECM drove the speedo and ODO electronically (no cable).

It could be the VSS, the ECM or the gague cluster itself. When my similar 91 Blazer lost the speedo and ODO it was the gague cluster itself that went bad. Bought a refurbished one from GM, had them spin the ODO forward to match the old cluster and popped it in. When I told the guy at the parts counter that I wanted him to spin it forward to 210K miles he about fell out of his chair!

Everything else on the Gauge Cluster works, tach, oil, etc. what a pain that'll be to change the whole cluster. Oh well.

BTW I used to live across from Pat's steaks at 10th and Wharton. I kinda miss Philly sometimes.

The gague cluster is actually very easy to remove. Couple of screws and such for the trim and other stuff around it, knowing how to release the headlight switch **** (there's a button to push on the switch itself that releases the pull shaft), and then about 6-8 screws for the cluster itself. Just pops right out- there's a quick-disconnect at the back for the wiring that automatically unplugs everything when you pull the cluster out. Far more "modular" than earlier cars with separate wires to all the different gagues.

An hours work if you're never done it before and go real slow. 15 minutes if you've done it before.

Just make sure it actually IS the gague cluster, though. I'd hook up a scan tool and drive around. If the ECM shows the correct speed on the scan tool then you know it's not the VSS and probably not the ECM.
