Alternator screw stud?

91 z28 305/350

Does the screw on the back of the alternator have a wire thats suppsed to go to it?

Weve done an engine swap and cant seem to find the wire that would go here, if there is one...

The guy at the parts store said if theres a stud there, theres a wire thats supposed to go to it...

But even the wiring diagrams Ive seen only show 2 wires.

There should be a two-wire field connector, and a larger single wire on the output stud. The larger wire would be connected directly to the battery through a link.

This single red wire that should bolt to the back of the alternator...it *should* be in the same wire loom with the 2 wire plug? And probably has that little rubber cap on the end, right?

I cant beleive that we have lost this wire during the 305-350 swap...

Perhaps we should try to find the *other* end...so...where does this wire go, from the alternator?

If memory serves me correctly I believe you are talking about the red power wire on the back of the Alt which should go to the Pos terminal of the starter through a fuseable link.

Yes....the one that connects to the screw...not part of the plug...

The problem is, we still cant find it...

Its nowhere to be found...if it were there, we could find it...but weve looked and looked and its just not there...

Probably end up just wiring up our own...

Anyone know the specs on it?

What gauge wire, and what size fuse?

And if that were not connected, would that keep it from cranking over?

You could run a 14 guage wire from the alt. to the starter make sure you use a 14 ga fuseable link.
That wire is what supplies current to the battery for charging.
Without it, it will start and run as long as the battery has a good charge.

The main thing is to make sure it is connected the positive side of the battery.

You might want to spend a little time to find the old one since the other end is connected to power. You could end up with a nice fireworks show and some pretty smoke.
Either one is not a good thing
