not really that hard. just get a wiring harness, sensors and ecm/chip for a 305 and it should run fine.

things you have to look into is the cam...i'm not sure what 283's got and the LSA of those cams. if all possible swap in a L98 cam or LT1cam. will run like a champ

The likelihood of a 283, last manufactured in 1967, having a stock cam in it anymore is something along the the lines of the Democrats lowering taxes and winning the war against terror. To boot, the cams mentioned are roller lifter cams, trying to put one of those in an old-school 283 would be an exercise in frustration and expense. However, good, compatible, aftermarket flat-tappet cams are plentiful.

With proper cam and exhaust, assuming the 283 is in decent shape and didn't have small-port & valve heads on it, the TPI would work well on it. TPI is overwhelmed by a healthy 305, so a 283 should be just right as long as the parts are chosen properly for it.

good point, i overlooked that but if you can find the roller lifters from a stocker 305-350 roller motor and swap that in, it will be cheap to do and work great. thats if those rollers will go in...since its not originally a roller block it probly will need retrofit rollers which are expensive. in that sense it would be best to stick with a flat tappet, with fairly mild specs. i just love roller cams, as they make superior power over non roller tappet cams
