Whats is wrong?
The timing on my 305 is advanced 15 degrees. When i try on set it where it is supose to be it sputters and dies. When i go to shut my car off some times it will diesel out when i shut off the key. Also on start up my car shoots out a bunch of carbon. It has new plugs, cap, rotor, wires. Any ideas what is wrong?

carbon ? liquid ?
if liquid then its fine its just condensation because it is cold out, most all vehicles do this
which way do you need to turn the distributor to set it to what you believe is where it needs to be ?
clockwise or counterclockwise ?
if clockwise is the way you have been trying to turn it then turn your idle speed screw clockwise some- if it is a carb engine
you need to give us more info
are you using a timing light ?
is your balancer in good shape ? the outer ring could have slipped, see if the rubber on it is in good shape and not missing chunks or falling out
if so then it may not be accurate and you wont be able to set your timing to the timing marks
you could set it with a vacuum gauge instead

Sorry its carb. The cap and rotor are on right. I have been using a timming light. I will try the idle screw and see what happens.
