i plan on pulling the engine and trans out when the weather gets warmer and spruce things up. now i'm in the phase where i'm picking and buying an engine lift, stand and a load leveler. what i want to do is remove the engine AND trans at the same time. i know when my buddy and i put his 454 and 4 speed in his monte carlo it was no biggie. but will it be able to handle my 5 liter and my 700r4? will it be too back heavy?

as long as the lift is rated for 1500 lbs you will be fine ... but you need the load leveler makes things alittle easyer

might have to strip the entire front of the car to get them both out at the same time probably get the car in the air too

I pulled my 305, 700R4, and driveshaft at the same time. With everything, it came out at about a 30* angle, but it has to come out at an angle anyways for the tranny to clear. Just hook the lift towards the back of the engine. Also, I removed the hood beforehand.

 

where did you guys get your equipment? plus what weight capacity did you guys get? any recommended brands?

 

do you have to drain your tranny? i remember removing a V6 engine and trans, and i didnt disconnect the driveshaft...i just pulled. and the shaft dropped to the dirt and the oil drained out. had to let it sit for a while while the grass soaked up the trans fluid (dont report me to greenpiece).

 

I just rented a lift for $40for a long weekend. I dont remember what it was rated at, definately less than a ton. I think they said 800-1000lbs is recommended load.

On top of this, i was on gravel, un even ground. It makes a HUGE difference if you drain the fluids out of the driveline you are pulling. I did this alone as well, and it wasnt too much of a problem. One thing i would recommend, is to get some low wooden blocks, pull off the front wheels (if you can wheel the hoist around), and lower the car onto the blocks. The front springs pop up enough that it will be annoying to lift the motor and tranny up and over the nose. If you have a helping hand its no biggie.

If you cant wheel around the lift though, leave the wheels on, tough it out over the nose, while pushing the car back.

(Plz dont try the 800lb thing though, that was stupid and dangerous on my part) but usually they are rated for atleast a ton nowadays. You should be ok.
