I just replaced my FP. Here's some info.
I didn't think it was the FP cause on board diagnostics didn't detect a pump prob. and I could hear the (elec) FP running when I'd turn the ignition. But it was the FP.
Symptoms: white exhaust, engine surged and loped bad(barely drivable), backfired, stalled, eventually wouldn't start.
Shop wanted $500, Did it myself. New pump was about $80.
I cut an access hole in the trunk and had to splice the lines but it was worth it.
92 Fbird, 3.1, MPFI

which lines did you splice?
did you use high preassure fuel hose? and put hose clamps on it?
Not sure how a White exhaust means fuel pump...normaly that means you are sucking water or coolant... which would explain the engine surge and the lope, the backfire, the stalling, and not starting
did i miss anything?
