Buying 1987 Firebird Formula. Emissions ?
OK, I am looking at an 87 Formula. It was a carbed car, but the guy I am buying the car from lives in a county that does not require emissions testing, and does know if the car would pass emissions. I of coarse live in a county that requires testing. The A.I.R. system has been removed by another owner, along with the cc carb, and it also has a regular distributor in it now. The carb on the car now is an early 70's vintage Q'jet. If I bought the car, I would go with a rebuilt Q'jet, and possibly a new cat converter. The guy wantsb 900 for the car, and the interior is in great shape, along with the body. I would be looking at possibly another 400-500 into the car just for emissions with the purchase of the new cat, and carb. The questions that I have is if anybody has been able to get this model year car to pass emissions without any of the computer controlled equipment, and going HEI, new cat from airflow, and rebuilt Q'jet carb. Also if anybody has any suggestions, or if they think it would be more of a headache than it would be worth.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

the car should already have a High Energy Ignition and with a new cat and a well tuned carb almost any stock vehical should pass emissions but it would be easier to just find a shaddy test center and pay the guy off to fudge the test

I live in GA and I get away from the emissions lol. Phew...
You can easily make any car pass. Just a little timing retarding and some other odds and ends and you will be good!

OK, so in other words, as long as the engine is in good tune, along with a new cat, and a decently rebuilt Q'jet, I really would not need the A.I.R. equipment, or the computer controls. I should be able to tune it to pass emissions then. Good, I might go ahead and buy it then. I just did not want to have to find all the computer control equipment, and the air equip plus the time or money involved. Anybody else have any advise? Thanks.

some states do a visual check during emissions testing.if yours do then due to missing components you will fail.IF you buy it id go ask them what theyre looking for, you may have to put all that was removed back on,if you can find it
