What is the maximum safe compression ratio you can run on 87 octane pump gas?

About 9:1 or so. Depends on the cam, but assuming a small one, 9-9.5:1.
If you're loading it doing with a lot of weight, *cough*, then i'd stay VERY conservative on it, and look at a very good cooling system above all. (ie, bathtub sized radiator).
