the car drives its self!

Hey guys, I just purchased an 89 formula, and I noticed that the car is idling a little high (1200) but only when it's not in gear, is this right? And when you put it in gear the car starts moving, but it seems to move very fast. I have a very steep driveway and the car will actually pull itself up it very quickly Also, when you are trying to come to a stop it is very hard to actualy stop the car, it just wants to kep going... could I have a converter problem or something?

either someone turned up your idle speed via the idle screw on the side of your thottle body or your IAC / throttle body is stuck open a little.
