frist rod are stock rod! ok i got my block back to day. started puting it back togather . every thing was going fine till i put in number 4 piston and there not room beside number 3 rod for it to fit. i check the size and it the size as the rest just dont under stand . so what could be wrong here? the stock rods come out of another motor and when the put the piston on the rod there not really remember them being but i remember the ears pointing toward each other is that right or does it mater?

Re: big rod problem please help?
there should be a dot or arrow on the top of the piston. All of the arrows should be on the front side of the engine.

Rods have a DEFINITE direction they're supposed to go.
The side with the bearing tangs should go away from the cam; the side without the tangs toward the cam.
You should have 4 pistons assembled to the rods (the odd cyls) such that if you hold the assy with the FRONT mark on the piston toward you, the bearing tangs should be to the right; and the other 4, for th eeven cyls, the tangs should face toward the left. If they're not like that, then the machine shop put them together backwards. If they're backwards, STOP, take them back, and get them done right.
When the rod is backwards on the piston, the chamfered side of the bearing will be toward the other rod on the same journal, instead of toward the crank throw. Then, the non-chamfered side of the bearing will try to ride up on the radius at the end of the journal, which will jam the rods together and maybe even lock up the crank.

You could have a bent or twisted rod.
I have seen them remachined and be crooked.
