Think I jumped a tooth??

i was droping my friend off home and my car randomly shut down and wont crank over got fuel gas and whatever...when u crank it over it wants 2 start but stops and gas comes flying out of the carb.if u sit with the petal to the floor for a lil it will start but as soon as u get off the petal it stalls..so my friends dad came and looked at it and he said it might have jumped a tooth..he told me 2 do a compression test to see if everything was right ..and it came out to 90.i think thats bad.I was wondering if anyone can give me other was to check if it jumped or if hes right or not

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

Check your timing. It might be to far retarded. Mine had the same problem and it was the dang timing. Disconnect the EST wire to do so. Tan and black wire along the passenger strut tower.

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

(My bad) You could just trial and error advancing it while cranking. Have someone help you. Or do what I did and get the No. 1 cylinder to top dead center with the spark plug out, using the damper marking to get it there. It's a 50/50 chance it will be on the compression stroke. Take the distributor cover off (make sure to mark it somehow so it can be reinstalled if it is correct) and look where the rotor is pointing. If it's I think 1/4 or more of an inch behind where it should be to fire the cylinder, advance it to get it to start and run at least and set your timing after it's running again.

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

so that proves what exactly? that you could have jumped a tooth... as timing doesnt just up and change itself... except if the cam has momenterally stoped or slowed its rotation in relation to the crank... so just pull the timing cover if you think you have jumped a tooth as ignition timing is no way to be sure and correcting ignition timing that you didnt change in the first place is silly

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

I thought the same thing when I had that problem, but somehow it just moved that little bit to not let it start. It's a whole lot easier to move the distributor around to get it to start than to pull the timing cover, that and another board member said if it jumped a chain..... I would have noticed it. It's not going to jump a chain without making a racket.

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

If an engine had a timing chain so worn out that it had enough slack to jump a tooth, it was toast anyway.

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

Changing the ignition timing isn't going to fix that 90psi compression test... Is that [average] on all cylinders??

nah i wouldn't say so, my brother has an 85 carmaro with a junkyard 307, he jumped a tooth, then put in a new timing set, then about a week later he raced about a 95 camaro with an lt1 and six speed and beat it three times on a quarter mile strip, while its well worn in, it still runs like a champ, sometimes he even brakestands the car and then launches it at 7000 rpm

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

yes if the chain came of the gear you would notice but we arent talking about that we are talking about it jumping a tooth... which would explain the 90psi compression not the fact that his IGNITION TIMING is off and continuing to run that engine with possible pieces of gear flowing through the oil is a BAD IDEA....

Re: Think I jumped a tooth??

ah put a new timing chain in it, reset the timing, check the compression, change the oil and filter, and your set to go, don't run it any longer now, but i wouldn't say it needs rebuilt just yet
