My car runs but stalls. Please help.

OK. I am back again. I have received a lot of help from yall and I appreciate it all. I am back again however. I have come very close to just junking this car but my love for camaros stopped me. Sorry for the novel. My issue is my car starts but it seems like the idle is set too low and it stalls out. To get it to start I have to pump the gas pedal. My car is an 89 camaro RS with a 305 TBI 700R4 tranny. I thought with fuel injection it was bad to pump the gas to get it started. I can keep it running if I pump the gas or hold the pedal and keep the engine at about 750 to 1000 rpm. It starts to sound rough if it gets below about 750 rpm. Here is what I have done: New fuel pump, new fuel filter(twice) new spark plugs, new oil pressure sending unit, new PCV valve, rebuilt TBI, new fuel pump relay. I am lost now. A neighbor said something about a throttle position adjustment. Is this possible with a TBI setup? The book I have says that only a qualified servie technician can conduct this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

i think the tps on a TBI car isnt adjustable... so where to start...well you have played with just about everything that could cause this problem so... did you do all of that to corrected this or did this start after you did all that work??

All that work was done before this problem started. I have a question though. How do I check the timing of the car if I can't keep it running?

OK. Let me rephraes something. When I said I rebuilt my TBI unit that is not necessarily true. What I did is replaced all the gaskets, washers and o-rings in the unit. I cleaned some of it. The seating surfaces and the grime on the tbi that comes from a 18 year old car. The car was sitting for probably 2-3 years without being started. I was reading some other posts on here as well. I did do a search. What is an IAC and could this be the problem?

Idle Air Control Valve =IAC
might be your problem, it controls your minimum air for idle. Also you replaced gaskets. spray some wd-40 around the gaskets and search for a vacuum leak.

make sure all vacuum hoses are reconected and are not cracked or anything.

start there and let us know

Another quick question. Would running 87 octane cause this to happen? As I am sure that you have figured out already I am not the wisest when it comes to this. Thanks in advance.

Re: My car runs but stalls. Please help.

I think it's worth stating that my car has the EXACT SAME problem. I have a 1989 IROC, and ever since I swapped out the old engine, I've had idling trouble of all kinds. Only recently, things have gotten a lot worse, and I hypothesize it has more to do with the ignition timing than anything else, even though there are likely multiple culrprits to this problem.

The tachometer reads a fluctuating idle, and it seems as though I'm not getting all of the power I should be getting, though this may also be a result of the TBI heads on my TPI setup. My vacuum seems to be fine, and other than a small crack in my Y-pipe, my exhaust is producing adequate backpressure. So far, the only way to fix this problem (in my case) has been to tighten the idle screw (it was actually set back a little far), and that's kept the engine reving enough to sustain itself, though I should really consider finding a way to time this thing. (I'm unsure because TBI is timed at 0 degrees, and TPI is timed at +6. Hard to know where to set with TBI heads and TPI intake)

Either way, good luck with any solution you conjure.

Re: My car runs but stalls. Please help.

yeah if your running TPI you need to set it to around 6* little more little less what ever it likes doesnt matter what heads or what a sticker says set it where the car likes it... but solving your problem will be pretty difficult as i am betting you are running a TPI ecu from a 5.0 on a 350
----------
no 87 octane would not cause this to happen

Re: My car runs but stalls. Please help.

OK. So here we go. I finally got it to run on its own. I removed the IAC valve. It was completely covered in grime. I took it apart like I saw in another thread and cleaned it off. I then cleaned the part of the TBI that it goes into. Then replaced the IAC. I started up the car and ran it at about 2000rpm's for about 3 minutes. Then backed down to 1000. Then let off the throttle completely. It idled on its own. Thanks again for everything. I really appreciate everybodys help on TGO.
