zz4 camshaft
zz4 camshaft
Ok so I got a line on a almost new (500 miles) zz4 camshaft and I am thinking about picking it up so I go out and finally figure out that the po of my car lied (not a big deal) and I have a carb'd 5.0 not a 5.7, I am wondering can I use this zz4 cam in my car or not, I have a holly dominator intake, 750 (I know I know over carbed) holley, I have a set of flowtech shorty's on the way but other than that I believe everything else is stock, what kind of work would I have to do to the heads before install of a zz4 cam, I am not gonna put much money into this 305 I am going to pick up a 350 block and start from scratch but would like to pep the 305 up a bit while I drive the car now and take my time and build the 350 the way I want to. The 305 is a center bolt motor and Im not to sure if its a roller or not. Hope this is the right place to ask this question and thanks ahead of time for any advice.

Re: zz4 camshaft
You need to verify your engine is a roller block or not. The ZZ4 camshaft is a roller and will not work with a non-roller block.
Also, the .474/.510" lift of the cam is more than stock heads will take, so you'll nedd new springs, and probably need to cut the valve guides down to clear the extra lift. This is something a cylinder head machine shop needs to do for you.

Re: zz4 camshaft
I got the SD1007 springs for the ZZ4 cam in my L-98 . 350 lbs @ 1.2" and 120 lbs @ 1.8" ( installed height ) and, stock diameter ....so you don't need the seats cut for bigger valves. I don't remeber the guides haveing to be cut down ...but that was 2 years ago So I could be wrong there.
