Oil sending unit
Ive got a 1987 Trans am GTA. My oil pressure was reading very low so I replaced the sending unit with one from advanced auto parts. After I replaced it my oil pressure is up but its reading very high. At idle it sits around 50 and while driving it goes past 60. Before it went out my pressure was around 30 at idle and 60 while driving. I did notice the new one was a little bit bigger than the one I took out. Also I put teflon tape on the threads can that affect it somehow? Anyone know a fix for this? Thanks!

Re: Oil sending unit
I had the same problems, first sender would read about 30 at cold start up then drop to about 25 and would sometimes dip down to 10-15 after running the car pretty hard, then the sender broke; the spade broke off.
Borrowed a sender from a friends Iroc and this one was 45psi at idle and went past 60 when throttling up, and would bounce a bit.
Got a new one and this one "appears" to work correctly, 30-45psi at cold start, dropping to 30 when warmed up and going down to maybe 25 after running the car hard.
I am running 20/50 Valvoline VR1 oil since I have 170K miles on my motor, but I really should hook a mechanical gauge up to see what the oil pressure really is.

Re: Oil sending unit
In my experience, the only ones that work correctly are the AC-Delco sending units. All the after market ones always read way too high.. Spend the extra $ for a genuine one, or just put in a mechanical gauge.

Re: Oil sending unit
I replaced the OPSU recently on my 85 IROC with an original AC Delco, part #D1829, at a cost of $27.99. I consulted this board when I was having problems with mine and was advised to use dielectric connector grease instead of teflon tape. I guess the teflon tape can interfere with the electrical current and give you messed up oil pressure readings. Since replacing mine, everythings worked just fine.
