High-Volume vs. High-Pressure Oil Pump
I have read some of the threads regarding these 2 types of oil pumps. I am really unclear as to which is the best to put into the car. I am pretty close to being finished with the engine rebuild and had originally purchased a high-volume oil pump.
What is the best one to use? I don't know if the high-pressure is a good thing or not or if the high-volume will actually pump the pan dry. I have a 2 qt. oil filter and a stock pan. The oil pressure before the rebuild was always pegged.
Oh, the car is a 87 Iroc Z28 camaro. The build I have is essentially a ZZ4 build now, and bored 60 over.
Anything else I should take into consideration?
Thanks,
Pat

Re: High-Volume vs. High-Pressure Oil Pump
A stock pump is probably all that is needed, especially with a rebuilt engine. The high volume pump has a bit bigger gears, bypasses more oil, uses a couple more horsepower. Higher pressure pumps are pretty much the same deal, stiffer bypass spring. Any pressure over 40 psi hot at speed is fine.

Re: High-Volume vs. High-Pressure Oil Pump
As mentioned, a high-volume pump has larger gears to move more oil. A high pressure pump has a stiffer bypass spring to allow higher pressures to be created.
A Mr. Gasket #26 bypass spring can be used in a stock pump to increase the pressure. It may not actually produce higher pressure than a stock pump unless the stock pump is already past the limit of its bypass spring.

Re: High-Volume vs. High-Pressure Oil Pump
Yea, so a high volume pump in a stock engine (stock clearances, no turbo charger, etc), has the stock volume requirements. So it will up the pressure across the entire RPM range.
Until 60psi or so, which is the max pressure before the stock bypass valve is used. A high pressure pump just has a stiffer spring, making it bypass at 80psi or so.
