Hello,
I'm getting ready to do a heads & cam swap, and I want to have all of the parts I need on hand to avoid delays / down-time of the vehicle. The engine has 57,000 miles on it; should I purchase a new timing set, or inspect the (factory original) existing set and go from there? I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to upgrade from stock, but I like to put the money where it does the most good.

you might as well do it now. It just means you have an extra 60k miles before you have to replace it again. It's cheap and you're at the place where it's easiest to do now. Stock chains aren't that strong, and do stretch, a good aftermarket double roller would be perfect.
Crossfire_83 just made a post about this, check the part number linked in that thread, that'd be a good choice since you want a roller cam one..

 

If you want to get the best bang for your camshaft buck, you should consider an adjustable timing set so that you can verify the camshaft is timed via cam manufacturers specifications.
