801 heads?
Hey all,
I was looking at a 305 today that I may buy. The motor is fresh out of the shop and he's in a financial bind and wants $400 for it.
The guy had a shop throw it together, and so he doesn't really know much about it. He's told me it has a Comp cam and the heads have been totally reworked, including ported/polished.
I took a look at it in person today, and removed one the valve covers, hoping to see some 416s looking up at me, but he's got 801s on there.
I know from checking out Mortec's site and doing some searches on this site that they are from a 80-86 trucks/vans. I know Sitting Bull ported a set of these heads with good results, and I read some comments in his thread about their chamber shape being good.
Anyhow, I've already got some 416s on the motor I'm running now, but they need to be rebuilt. I'm thinking, after researching, that I'm probably going to just stick with the heads the 801s since they're already on and ready to go, and there doesn't SEEM to be much of a difference.
Are these 58cc heads? Does anyone know? Should I stick with these heads, or is there enough of a difference to justify pulling them off and replacing them with some rebuilt 416s?
Also looking at a 350 which another guy in a similar situation is asking $800 for. As soon as I know the specs on the motor, I'll probably post them in here and get a consensus on whether it's worth it or not, if it's not obvious.
I'd rather not spend $800 (especially since I already have a 350 that I'm about to pull and can rebuild), but if it's pretty potent, I'll spend it.
Thanks for any help!

Re: 801 heads?
Sure its not '601'? Those 6s very often get confused by 8s - by me anyway.
If its got 601s, those are about on-par with 416s in stock form, but have a bit more potential once you work them a bit. They have a better chamber design (similar to the old fuellie 462 heads, but a bit better) and a bit smaller 55cc chambers.
I have 601s on my 350 with 1.94/1.6 valves and its great! Other than the valves, the heads are basically stock. Great heads for a factory casting.
