I hate lifters...
OK, i wanted to get some suggestions from people that would know more about this than me... I have a '90 305 that I just converted from tbi to carb with a 700 r4... an edelbrock 2701 performer intake and a edel 1406 carb... a lifter started tapping on me so I figured while i fix that, till I get my crate motor, I would go ahead and put a better cam in there with a new timing chain... I wanted to get some suggestions on a cam and lifter kit that would be decent for the money... nothing to amazing due to Im saving for a 383 in the future.. something that would wake it up but not break it... by the way I will be running the stock swirl port heads(yes I know they are crap) Just wanted to see what u guys thought... sorry for the long post

Well, i hate to say it but if your looking for a cheap and mild cam you can pick up an edelbrock cam & lifter kit for next to nothing.
But as usual, you get what you pay for. The cam uses a VERY old grind, thus isnt really a great choice for someone looking to make some good power.
Where are you located? I have a used edelbrock cam you can have for a few bucks plus shipping if you want.

well I would buy it but im not a big fan of edelbrock... only reason I have the intake and carb is because it was the right price lol i was looking into something from crane cams that came with lifters... i believe it was a 260 duration, .440 lift something or another cant remember the rest... but was a mild cam that wouldnt blow up my motor

yes, something like the 262 cams are enough to give a stock motor a little wakeup call without having to do much else to the car.

Re: I hate lifters...
are you sure your lifter tapping is just that? It could be the valve seat leaking by. Do a leakdown test before you spend cash.

Well i came to the conclusion that i Do have a lifter tapping and an exhaust leak... best of both worlds... so I ordered a new cam and lifter set... my valves are leaking badly judging from the smoke on start up so I found a good machine shop down here thats gonna get me some rebuilt 187 **** heads for cheap cheap, as well as a new timing chain... just trying to keep this thing running long enough to get my new motor in which will take awhile

Re: I hate lifters...
doing a "valve job" or swapping heads on a high mile engine is usually a bad idea as you are increasing sealing power the new valves which might cause blow by with the old rings and make any gains from new heads mote

I agree with you on not to polish a turd!! lol but when i bought this car 6 months ago I was told they had the motor out and did a rebuild but threw on the heads cam and lifter from the orginal... didnt even get the heads reworked so I'm hoping they did rebuild it... cuz the thing was in **** poor shape when I got it... guess we will find out soon...
