scratching my head

I have a question that might be a stupid one but here goes..... I have noticed that there are 2 cables that are hooked to the shifter in my 89 t/a.... One that goes to the transmission and one that goes to the drivers side under the dash...... I would like to know if there is anyone that can explain this to me as its function...... thanks

It connects the ignition lock to the shifter lock. Can't take the shifter out of park until the key is turned off lock.
