Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

Hi,

I am putting in taller valve covers on my 305 and I am having a pcv valve problem.

First of all the rubber gromet does fit into the provided hole. However, there is no hole for oil fill. I will drill that later.

My problem with the valve covers is that the baffle thats provided to go under the PCV valve needs to be bolted onto the valve cover itself. I am very weary about using bolts underneath the valve cover. If they ever fall out, its bye bye engine..

So my question is... Is there any chance I can run the pcv valve without the baffle underneath it?? Any aftermarket PCV valves that I can use instead??

Please let me know.

Tighten the bolts and they'll be fine.

They sell PCV grommets with baffles built into them. Available at Summit, Part Number# MOR-68772 (Made by Moroso).

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

DON'T run without the baffle installed- it'll suck a lot of oil through the PCV without it installed. Use Nyloc nuts or hit it with some LocTite if you're nervous.

Agreed- there are other PCV grommets available out there. MOST aftermarket valve covers use a 1.22" hole. Oil the grommet up and install by pushing and twisting at the same time- they are tight on install for a reason (because you don't want them leaking or falling out).

or you could go regular nut w/ loctite, then nylon-lock nut w/ more loctite to jam it..

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

The valve covers came with self tapping screws. So I tried putting them in, and broke the hole in half. So, I said screw it, and threw it on without the baffle. I started the car up, let it run for a while, pulled out the pcv valve to see if its sucking any oil, and the covers are tall enough to where I think there should be no problem. I'll keep an eye on it, see if there is oil being sucked up, so far I drove it for about 45 minutes and no smoke what so ever.

If there are problems I will have to flip the covers, and they were a PITA to put on as is. We will see what happens.

P.S. I have one of those gromets on order from Summit. A lot easier than to screw with the stupid screws.

Just fill the oil through one of the breather holes.

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

Thats what I had in mind.

It looks a lot cleaner with one less hole there. Plus, I will be deleting the heater diverter valve (or at least re-locating it) so you can admire the covers. Plus once the *** load of hoses is moved it will be easier to access the valve cover in the future removals. Those 1.6 rockers will be going in next month, as well as new injectors the month after that.

One thing I was worried about (and I will snap some pics here in a bit) is the alternator power wire. The plastic/protective cover sits flush with the valve cover. I am just worried that the cover might get hot enough to burn through that, Although the bolt itself is quarter inch distance from it.
Is there anything I can put there for piece of mind (something that wont melt on the covers and ruin them and wont ground the power wire and really **** me off)???

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

You're right- the alt. post will usually touch a taller than stock valve cover. It's a job for "Dremel Man!!" Just zip off the unused threads that stick out beyond the nut.

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

After looking at it, I don't think there will be a problem. If you have a suggestion just jot it down on the pic here and let me know where you cut yours.
Here is the pic of the trouble area.

Here is how the engine looks. I like it very much (without all the cluter that is)

Oh, I got too creative on my Throttle body plate, so a TRANS AM TB plate is in mail.

How do ya like the covers??

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

i can't really get a good visual of the clearance between the alt and cover but if they bolt up theyre good to me. valve covers add a nice touch the engine. i would not have put the covers on with out the baffles i can't imagine they would'nt burn oil but best of luck to ya.

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

I broke the mounting hole, so a "special" baffle is coming in the mail. For now i am running without one, and no problems what so ever. I check it to see if there is any oil, but nothing.

Just for fun, leave your filler cap off (open valve cover) and turn the engine on. Guess what? No oil coming out of the cover. I've done this stupid thing couple of times because I am stupid and you can see the oil circulating, but its never shooting out, nor is it even close to the top of the valve cover.

The ALT in that picture has a protective plastic cap over the back bolt and that cap is touching the valve covers. Its right under the red wire. Black plastic right up against the valve cover.

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

That black plastic cap should be fine as long as it doesnt get brittle and crack. Valve covers rarely get hot enough to really do damage to those kinds of parts. For instance, convoluted wire tubing can sit on the valve covers all day long and not get distorted. The little black thing covering the power connection on your alternator can take alot more temp than wire tubing.

Just out of curiosity -- I see you put the PCV in the stock location, but where did you drill for the breather or fresh air on the pass. side? I am wondering wether it might be better to put it on the front or back end of the passenger side valve cover.

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

What I did for my clearance issue with the alt wire was take out the 3 bolts that hold te alternators case together, put a paper clip in the small hole (just in case) and rotate the case 120*. I had to extend the wires but it definitely clears with ease now.
Just a thought

Re: Tall Valve covers and PCV valve?

88305tpi-- There is only one way that these covers fit. So, the hole on the other side is towards the back. I have really nice chrome air breather with a pcv extention to fit the vacum hose, so it looks stock when I take it for emissions.

Thats a great idea for the alternator. I'll try that. Although I agree with 88350tpi that, those kinds of plastics can take some good heat, and valve covers rarely get that hot.
