No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
I bought a Carbeurated 86 IROC 305 from a friend in Oklahoma and he ripped off every emission component including the ECM. Does anyone have any ideas how I can pass in Texas? I'm thinking that if I get the motor tuned and bolt on a Catalytic converter it might work. The only setback will be that I have no EGR valve, since the ECM is gone and the intake is aftermarket I can't even put one on. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice. Thanks, J.
Re: No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
Your best bet is to put on a cat and tune it up so it will pass the sniffer and try and find an inspector who will overlook the visual inspection for you.

Thats what I'm thinking, I found a shop that does emissions testing without actually inspecting it. I just got the car running real good last night, it's as lean as can be. I'm going to try and test it with not cat and see how it does. I'll update once I find out. Thanks, J.

Suggestion - dump a one quart can of denatured alcohol into a half tank of gas and drive it for 20 minutes before going into the testing station. Helps a lot as I 'understand" it.... PM me for details or more explanation of needed. I'm in the Dallas area and I got my 383 MR set up tp pass without EGR assistance...

Re: No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
I will give that a try for sure, I'm going to test it on Friday...I'll let you know what happens. The motor is running real clean and good, I'm hoping for the best, if it passes the shop is going to issue me a sticker. Do you recommend any particular struts and tires for the car. Sitting dormant for 3 years has done a number on the rubber and suspension. Thanks again!

Just make sure you get DENATURED alcohol. Like from Home Depot.

Re: No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
I had a similar incident as well, a TPI motor
with a HC problem.
Besides fixing the AIR system, I also use 2 quarts
of Denatured Alcohol from ACE hardware. It passed
with ease, numbers are very healthy. But I did have
EGR/AIR components intact.
I didnt use alcohol at all the first time through, and
the numbers were sky high..
Good luck!

Same here. And that was even with brand new Magnaflow cats.

Re: No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
I'm going for an inspection on Friday, I ran it all the way out of gas today to make sure there was no more old stuff in the tank. I'm going to top it off with 92 and put some 104 octane booster in it today. By Friday I'll have that tank spent and fill it halfway with 92 and add the 1 quart of denatured alchohol. I just put on a brand new Holley 600, hypertech cap/rotor, 8.8 wires, and new plugs. The motor is running great, I was going to try to get it inspected today but the parking brake and horn aren't working, I'll get that squared away tonight. So far I am very impressed with the machine, I think I'm in love! I just wish it didn't red-line so early and had a little more pickup.

Re: No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
I'm telling ya, go with denatured alcohol, about one quart for every 5 or 6 gallons of gas. I dumped 2 quarts into my 95 F-150 last night and it passed the sniffer with ease today. This truck has 276K miles on it, yes that's TWO HUNDRED (not a typo) and it still has the original cat on it. We all know that cat was burned empty a long time ago.It does have the EGR, but the D-A has to be the only reason it passed this time. It didn't pass the last two years, but it did this time! And the last tune up was a year ago, last oil change almost 3 months ago. The denatured alcohol really WORKS!

You were both right! Heres how it went down....I went to Home Depot, picked up a quart of denatured alchohol and poured it in. I drove around for about 20 minutes and then I went to the inspection station and it passed with flying colors. The mechanic was supposedly going to take care of me, but instead turned me away for not having the components. They were astounded that it passed with no emissions components at all. Luckily no charge for the Dyno test. I drove back to work, an hour later I went to a station suggested by a friend that was 45 minutes away. When I got out of the car I noticed a white smoke coming from the tailpipes at low idle rpm's, but still decided to run it anyways. As Bob said, the NOx levels were over 400 too high...I talked to a mechanic about it and he told me that he didn't understand how it passed earlier, that once it's in the tank time shouldn't matter. The white smoke clears at about 1500 rpm's and the engine seems to be fine. It has 94K on it and everyone I've talked to agrees that it is probaly just making her run rich for now. The tank is almost empty, I don't know whether to fill up and dillute it, or run it out? Any ideas? Anyways, it looks as though I'm going to have to invest in emissions components and put the stock air intake back on. I hate to see what that is going to do to my horsepower though. I'm going to keep it clean for now, in three years I don't have to worry about it anymore and I'll have my 383 built by then! I appreciate everyones help and advice!

Nope, time doesn't matter. Sounds to me like you've developed another problem. White smoke is almost always steam - somehow it's burning water....

I checked everthing out, the heads are fine, and the block surely not cracked. I have no sign of water in the oil either, I think it just needs a valve job. The white smoke issue has went away completely. I'm going to upgrade the heads and cam soon anyways, I'll get her taken care of then.
Re: No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
Well, I used to live in TX and I can tell you they have gotten tough on Emissions. I remember taking my F body in for inspection and beinging asked to open the hood.
When I did and was asked where exhuast emissions were? I pointed at the headers and said " You see those pipes coming from the side of the motor?" "There, that's the exhaust emissions" "It emits all the exhaust out the back of the car".
After being promptly told" I can't put a sticker on this" I pulled my car out and went down the road. To the next station, trust me you are not going to pass without the right equipment. But for and extra 20 bucks....Well...I thought you looked under the hood... no, says the first tech....to the second... you did..... yeah yeah.... thats right.....right before break time.....
new sticker good to go.

Re: No Emissions components...can I pass? TX
You should have ran the tank low when adding the addative right before the test. Then refill completely with fuel right after the test. I never had a problem that way.
Fortunately vehicles in Ontario Canada that are '87 and older are no longer E-tested.
