Engine problem?
Hello.. This is my first time posting, not sure where to put this, but... I just traded my danger for an 89 firebird about a week ago and so far i love it.. But I have a question about how its been running? Whenever i give it gas to accelerate it goes then it somewhat bogs down for about 2 seconds then gets going again I just put a new air filter in it as that is about the only thing i could think of it just had an oil change also.
And.... after about 80mph it still has some ***** but wont acelerate even tho its at about 2.5 rpms in overdrive, for some reason it will shift to a higher gear then switch right back into the pervious gear.. or thats how it seems... by the way its an automatic mpi 2.8 v6 and another question
Whenever I have it in drive and have the brakes pressed down,,at a stop light for example it idles roughly and fluctuates between 1000 and 500 rmps? and when i put it in park it stays at around 700-800 rpms? sorry for this mess of questions i don't know much about cars as far as engines. any input greatly appreciated.

Look for a vacuum leak and as far as no go after about 80 mph. I'm not familiar with that V-6, but that sounds about right.

Just because that lil 2.8 is in a bird chassis doesnt mean it can fly! I would be happy that it can do 80mph at all
Seriously though, were talking about a motor that pushed a whopping 135hp when it rolled out of the factory almost 20 years ago. Even with the anemic 305 or even 350s they put in these cars they werent exactly rockets!
If your looking to do 150mph, your using the wrong equipment. But if you want something half decent on fuel you got it...
Start checking vac lines and intake gaskets for cracks/leaks.

Re: Engine problem?
Lets not bash the V6's. My car came stock with a v6 and it had no problems topping 100mph, with ease. Sounds like a lean problem, as far as the bog goes. If the rough idle only occurs when the brake pedal is depressed, i would look towards the vacuum booster as being a possible culprit. As far as the funny trans action, adjust the TV cable per proper instructions. If you just bought the car, then probably a complete and thorough tune-up is in order, its something i have always done with every used car i bought.
