Drove through water. Motor wont stay running.

A few days ago I drove through four inches of water around 30MPH. Not on purpose. Trying to avoid hitting a car that stopped suddenly.

After I went about halfway through it my engine stalled. I had to have it towed home. At first my engine wouldn't even turn over. I turned it over manually and eventually the starter would turn over the engine. I found out that water got inside the engine and in the oil. I since changed the oil and probably will have to several times more. Also, the air filter has been changed because it was soaked and covered with debris from the trees and such.

I took out the spark plugs and turned the motor over to get the water out and put oil in so that it would not dry out. Now the motor will start if I give it gas and it will stay running if I give it gas. I unplugged the MAF, thinking that might be the problem. But, it still wont stay running. I checked the vacumn lines and they are all intact. I read in the Haynes manual that it might be the ECM. Is there a way to check to see if the ECM is bad other thing buying a new or used one? Or is there anything else you can think of?

Thank you

Pull off the distributor cap & rotor. Dry them out. Ditto with the plug wires and distributor cap terminals.

I already did that. The motor runs fine if I give it gas. It just wont stay running.

Re: Drove through water. Motor wont stay running.

i had trouble like that too like 3 months ago, tons of rain and i had to get home so lake sized puddles were everywhere, i have a ram air setup so thankfully mine wasnt as bad as urs, but mine ran like crap for over a week after, urs is far worse, i had to adjust everything, i killed my MAF, thats prob wat happened with urs water destroys them, ur car with run without the MAF but it will run like **** and will most likely stall when no gas is given. water would affect the distrubter as well and would cause it to run like ****, water could have affected the TPS voltage like mine which ihad to adjust, as well as ur IAC and TB, i had to remove mine and totally clean it completely and lub everything up, check ur IAC as well and adjust it accordingly. u could have whiped out a few sensors as well. are u throwing any codes? i dont think it would be ur ECM unless the water shorted something out and caused a prob with the ECM, the ECM is in the car so water would not have affected it. seems like ur in for a long game of trial and error.

It is throwing codes 33 and 34. That would be the maf. However, I unplugged the maf but it still wont idle. Thanks for all the info. Looks like it might be a while before I get it running correctly.

Re: Drove through water. Motor wont stay running.

thats the code that mine threw, it killed the maf, doesnt mean the car wont run with it plugged it bc it will but doesnt mean it is functioning properly, and if the MAF is unplugged the car wont be able to idle if it does its gona be really really rough.

i threw code 34...i belive its a MAF burnoff problem, car ran like **** and it would when driving the cars RPM's would drop off as i slowed and let go of the accelerator. i replaced the MAF, cleaned the TB, set the TPS, checked the IAC and now it runs great. sounds like ur MAF is bad. find someone who has one from a V8 and just pop it on urs and test it to make sure. the water that got in ur engine would wipe out a MAF easily.

The engine is running now!

The MAF and IAC went bad. I think the IAC was bad for a while now. Because, my engine has never idled so smoothly before. Thank you for all your help customblackbird.
