87 Trans Am Engine Help
I have an 87 trans am that originally came with the 350 tpi in it. I have the wiring harness that came with it, but i havent looked to see if it is complete. Now I bought a TPI system off ebay and it is without the hole for the 9th injector, and it is my understanding that 87s came with the 9th injector. I already have the long block 350. My question is will the TPI system work without the 9th injector, and if so how will i go about doing that. Could I bypass it, and Reprogram the computer to allow more fuel in for cold starting? Or am I better off buying a new TPI system with 9th injector hole. Any help I would appreciate. This car has been sitting in my driveway for a year now. Ive been driving my 2000 firebird since, and I want to start getting the Trans Am out on the road. Thank you for your time.

Re: 87 Trans Am Engine Help
which 350 ? there are 2 different style heads 87 and earlier or 88 and later .The 4 center bolts are at different angles . If the manifold you have is the correct one for the heads I think you can switch the computer to the late speed density style (without the ninth injector)and get rid of the MAF sensor or switch the runner to the early MAF style and keep the extra injector .

To answer just your question.....Yes.
You don't need the 9th injector.
You can reprogram the startup fuel tables if you want.

The break for the different head styles was '86 & '87. '88 was the first year for self aligning rockers, though. However, none of that has anything to do with the TPI changes.
'85 was first year of TPI, 305 only, all intake mount bolt angles were the same, used a slow computer, MAF, cold start injector.
'86 still had intake mount bolt angles all the same, still 305 only, used better computer, same MAF, cold start injector.
'87 was the beginning of the center two bolt angles on each side being 72 degrees, same computer as '86 except 350 now available, MAF, cold start injector. No changes for '88.
'89 eliminated the cold start injector, still MAF.
'90-'92 were speed density, no cold start injector or MAF.
So, the TPI system could be '89, '90, '91, '92 and not have the 9th injector, but you'd still need to know whether it is '89, or '90-'92.
