What happens when you turn the key?

OK, i think i have a basic understanding of how most things work (car wise) except for this.. When you turn the key to start the engine, i know the starter cranks, the fuel pump runs, the injectors open, the spark plugs spark.. etc etc.. we have life!

BUT....

What happens when you turn the key off and you want to shut down the engine? It can't just turn off the fuel pump, the car shuts down too quick for it to of run out of fuel.. it can't turn off the injectors, carbs dont have injectors..

So, the question is, what ACTUALLY happens when you turn the key to off, how does it kill the motor? EFI, Carb, Diesel (i'm guessing Diesel and EFI will prob be roughly the same?)

well, as far i know, it just stops sending electricity to the coil, but i could be wrong.

Diesel, I wonder if they just shut down the injectors.

Im not totally sure though.

On a gas engine, the power is turned off to the ignition. On fuel injected cars, the ECM, fuel pump and injectors also all lose their power.

So one of the relays activated by the ignition switch supplies power to the Coil?

Cheers,
Richard.

I believe coil power is switched directly through the ignition switch, not through a relay.
