bad sending unit

Well one day i started my car and when i cut it off the pump continued to run so i looked at the oil pressure switch and unpluged it to kill the pump seems like whenever i hook it back up the pump runs. The pressure gauge itself is now pegged all the way down as far as it goes way past 0 is this a bad switch? the pump wont stay running either now.
