Help with my starting problem!!!

First off here is the problem. Car started fine when I first got it. Then all of a sudden the car wouldnt start sometimes. I would turn the key and then nothing would happen. The gauges would move but no starter action or clicks or anything. this is a 1989 z28 5 speed. Anway at first, i could try a bunch of times and move the shifter and the key and then it would start.

So, i started by checking the battery connections and the connections on the starter and cleaned them all made sure they were all tight. Tried it, nothing. I also tried to checkk if it was the clutch safety switch by disabling it and it wasnt that. What else should I check?

could the wires on the ignition switch itself be causing this? or could it be something else. if it is the ignition switch, how do i get to it? do i have to pull the steering wheel and stuff off or is there an easier way. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

check the ignition switch on the steering column under the dash near the fire wall.its mounted on top of the column.you will have to drop the steering column to access it.had the same problem with my 84 z28

do you have a mat or extra carpet under the clutch pedal ? maybe that the clutch pedal is not going down far enough . there is a switch in the linkage that will not let the starter engage unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed . an extra mat or thick carpet can cause this . happened to me . hope the problem is as simple as this . hope this helps .

did you check to see if you had power down at the starter and did you check the fusible links and also check to see if you had power on each side of the fusible links.also did you check the wire that runs from the starter by the firewall that goes into the back of the firewall into the car?
