Timing Issue

I unplugged the ESC Little Tan wire with Black Stripe.

The Timing Tab in on the Driver Side of the Block.

I set the Mark at 0* TDC, Then I Looked in the Spark plug Hole and theres the Piston. So The mark and Tab Are Right On.

I Start the Engine and check the Timing, and the Mark is way off.. I Timed it by ear, theres No popping and it revs/Idles Smooth..

I Noticed the the mark Is at the 12 O' Clock Position.... So Why is it Way over there?

Try that again, only watch for the piston from about 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock.

Re: Timing Issue

Its all 305 Except the Engine Which is a 350. All the electronics are 305..

Do you Think That Im Not at the Firing TDC?

I do have a timing light.. I tried to use it, but it didnt Fire anywhere near the tab.. So I tried to get it at a good spot..

Because that's where it belongs: that's where the factory put it. Look at a stock timing cover, and you'll observe that the timing tab is right about at 12:00.

Seeing the piston is good; but hardly precise enough to verify the accuracy of the tab. When near the top, it moves very slowly as the crank rotates.

I'm going to go out on a limb (since that's where all the fruit is) and guess this is a stock crank damper and some sort of aftermarket bolt-on timing tab?

If you have that combo, then your "mark" is about 35° retarded from where it belongs.

While not "perfect", this is a more accurate method for setting "timing" than most people give it credit. Believe it or not, the engine does not whup out a timing light and observe that "mark", look at the "number" that goes with it, and then make its decision accordingly as to whether it will run right or not. Equally incredibly, the best place to set the timing, is where the engine runs the best. I.e., give the engine what it wants. More often than not, this will be at whatever base timing is required, such that when the engine is at about 3000 RPM or higher with very low vacuum (WOT basically), the timing will be at about 36° BTDC.

So until you ACCURATELY find TDC with a piston stop or something, don't bother with the mark; just set it to where it runs the best.

Re: Timing Issue

Oh I see. Im On the wrong Stroke. I need to get a New Cover with the Top Center Timing Tab. I Hate it when people screw stuff up like that and dont say anything when you buy it.

Thanks Alot for the Help. I Guess I Can get by where its at for a few days..
