ok the car is a v6 first off. but anyways what i am doing is this.

1. setting the timming mark on the balancer at 10*
2. putting the distributor so that the rotor points to #1

still wont fire, got good spark and fuel.

3. set the timming mark back to 10*
4. flip the distributor to #4 piston.

this is the way ive always done it and its always worked, but now when i do this you need to twist the distributor alot like 1/2 turn and all it does is back fire? any ideas what to do next?

 

check that you got the wires to the right plugs

 

Even if you want that 10deg advance you still drop the dissy in at 0deg TDC with #1 pointed at #1 cylinder. To make sure you are at TDC you can take the valve cover off and crank the motor untill you get close to 0 and watch if your #1 valves start moving if they dont its #1 tdc if not its 180 out go around to 0 again. Then you can set that 10deg.
