help with heads
got question about heads. right now i have a 400 sb in my 86 z. i am comming home from iraq here in a few months, and am looking to make some more power. ballpark figure i am looking for is 500 +. with a 400 it shouldn't be to hard or too expensive. basically i would like some opinions on heads or head/cam combos. as far as the biggest bang for the buck. i am not a bracket racer, so bear in mind it is still the weekend toy, just with a little bit bigger *****. thanx guy

First, thank you for your service in defense of our country.
Now, "too expensive" is a very subjective term. $2000 for a set of bare heads isn't "too expensive" to some people. Is to me, but what's your level of pain?
Vortec-style heads are typically pretty cost efficient for the HP made. A set of large-port Vortec iron heads with 206cc intakes, 2.00/1.55 valves, 65cc chambers, capable of .530" lift will run you about a grand http://www.sdparts.com/product/25534...inderHead.aspx . For about $200, you could get a set of aluminum Fastburns http://www.sdparts.com/product/12464...inderHead.aspx . You'll need a Vortec-type intake manifold like the Performer RPM Vortec.
A Comp XE284 cam should put you in that HP range with either of those heads.
How well is your bottom end built?

Re: help with heads
thanx for the input. to get a little more specific. the bottem end.......aahhhhh well right now it is just a stock two bolt main. when i get home i will take it to the machine shop and have them slpay the mains and make it a four bolt, then line hone it. all in all the top end of my budget is some where around 1000-1300 for heads.
