Is there quick/easy way to tell if AC has been converted to 134a? Or do I have to start taking it apart to be able to tell.

If it has been converted, there should be an adapter on the valve nipple. Sometimes people will only change the valve on the high pressure side and not the low pressure side. It should also have a blue dust cap over the nipple on the high pressure side.
If you can't tell, take it to get the oil changed and ask them to check the A/C at the same time. Since you are paying for the oil change they might check it for free. Especially if they think that you will pay them to recharge it.

Also if it was converted it "should" have a blue sticker somewhere near the system, I say "should".
