Just rebuilt 305 and it wont fire

I just rebuilt a 305 and truned the key and it cranked but didnt start. I rechecked the timing, checked the spark, and i have compression. I put a little fuel in the carb and still didnt get anything... any ideas?

Re: Just rebuilt 305 and it wont fire

so you have spark and you have fuel...
Are you 100% that you are fireing on the rite stroke?
take the distributor out and turn the rotor 180* then slide it back in, see if that works.

EDIT: just thought I should add this thread has a 100% chance of being moved to either the tech & general engine or carb section of the forum.

Re: Just rebuilt 305 and it wont fire

or take #1 spark plug out and bump engine with BATT wire unplugged at the HEi cap until you feel air coming out of the spark plug hole, now turn the engine until the balancer line is on the tab

pull the HEI cap off make sure the rotor is pointing at the wire going to the #1 plug

if so then make sure its not too far advanced or retarded

if not then thats the problem

from factory the #1 wire tower on the cap was the second one clockwise from where the wiring plugs into the cap

make sure firing order is right also

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

good luck

the starter is turning the engine kinda slow. could that be linked to the problem? idk what else it could be. its a factory starter...

Re: Just rebuilt 305 and it wont fire

just rebuilt my 305 and had the same issue. I was POSITIVE that I was on the number one plug wire. but my dist is just very picky. Is the carb spitting fuel? got a friend that can give you a 2nd pair of eyes. always helps to have a 2nd opinion once you've been working on the same issue for a while.

Re: Just rebuilt 305 and it wont fire

OH!!!!!
Are you shure youre timing chain crank (bottom) gear is on the rite mark, because there is normaly two on the crank gear (1 and 0).

I set mine to 0 when it was ment to be set at 1 and when cranking it seemed like the engine would lock up. its coz it was firing when the piston is still on its way up.

Re: Just rebuilt 305 and it wont fire

as long as it's steady I wouldn't worry too much about it. you might want to charge it good after you get the car going. if it stays inadiquitly charged too long it could go bad. you definatly have a timing issue though. you're positive that you have the plug wires going to the right plugs? I spent 16 hours straight a couple weeks ago rebuilding my engine and ended up making a lot of half assed simple mistakes.

EDIT: just noticed VenomX post before me. he's got a great point since you rebuilt the whole motor.

i installed the cam gear with the dowel at the three o' clock position and the timing dot at 6 o' clock. the crank gear keyway at the two o' clock position, and the dot at 12 o' clock.
----------
I retraced plug wires with a buddy about ten min ago and they all went to the correct cylinder.

Re: Just rebuilt 305 and it wont fire

Im not sure if this will help any but after we did a cam swap on my bros 83Z, we started it, but had to shut it down cause of fuel leaking. We tried to get it started again but it wouldnt. It didnt sound like the battery was dead or anything, but we got it started by jump starting it with my 86 Iroc. It started right up. Again Im not sure if that helps but maybe its worth a try?

Good luck

because that way I can try track down how it is ment to be setup on the net, like I had to when I stuffed mine up (didnt have a picture in the box, and the instructions were minimal).

But it looks rite to me.

your right... it was lack of power flow due to an insufficient ground on the motor..paint was blocking it. had to go to the professionals for that one.. but same basic principle i think. after we did that we gave it a jump and it started right up. thanks for the help guys.
