1pc rear main seal install

Hey Ya'll, I've got a Fel-pro 1pc rear main seal to install and on the "flat"
side of the seal there is the word "outside". Does this mean I should install
the seal with "outside" in the housing toward the tranny or in the housing
toward the block ? I know this question sounds dumb but if there's a way
of screwin' up - I'll find it !

Re: 1pc rear main seal install

No point starting another thread so here's my question... I've already got the old seal out using a small prybar. Do you need a specialty tool to install the new one? The service manual says so, but then again they suggest a specialty tool for just about everything. Any tips so I don't screw up the seal? Was just planing on coating it real good with oil and work it around a bit at a time. Does it bottom out or do you just stop when it's flush with the retainer?

TIA

Keep it as square as possible as you drive it in. Small hammer taps walking around the seal usually work best.

The tool just contacts the entire seal frame at the same time with a stem in the center to hammer on.

Re: 1pc rear main seal install

My "special" tool is a 2x4 against the seal and a hammer to hit the 2x4.
