HEI troubleshooting

my camaro has an intermittent miss, very noticeable at idle & low speed...after adjusting the carb several times, I put a spark plug firing indicator on the plug wires and found the miss is in the ignition system......it shows up on almost every cylinder at random times......I'd say the problem is in the HEI distributor, but other than just changing the coil, etc, is there any easy way to isolate the problem ??????

How new are the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and coil?

Re: HEI troubleshooting

Yup, I had the same problem and when the engine started to miss I noticed that the tach would jump around. Never did know why? Anyhow I waited until it got dark out and fired that honey up, poped the hood and man it looked like the forth of july. A set of Accel 300+ wires and problem solved.

Re: HEI troubleshooting

new plugs, wires, and a brand-new MSD Street-fire distributor, as of last August......maybe 200 miles on the rebuilt engine and ign system.......

I thought you said it was HEI.

When did the problem show up?

Re: HEI troubleshooting

well, its been idling rough since I fired it up this spring after rebuilding the Q-jet....I figured it was just the carb needing to be tweaked, untill yesterday, after I just couldnt tweak the carb anymore. I put the spark tester on the wires and noticed the skip in the flashing tester light. The street-fire is MSDs version of the HEI distributor......
