Oil pressure drops to 0
Oil pressure drops to 0
91 camaro z28 5.7 TPI
My problem is that when I start the car the oil pressure gauge seems to be working fine. When the car starts to heat up i notice that the oil pressure gauge drops to 0. The oil levels haven't gone down nor have I heard the valves. I have read that this is probably due to the oil pressure sending unit. I read that it is suppose to be by the distributor on the driver side. No such unit is there. I also have a 305 TBI and I can see the bell shaped sending unit that I have read about.
So my 1st question: Can anyone help me figure out whats causing my gauge to drop to 0?
My 2nd question if it is the sending unit: Where is the sending unit?

Re: Oil pressure drops to 0
sounds to me like the oil press/ fuel sw. [ mine was acting goofy till i changed
it ] its on the drivers side above the oil filter . 1 1/8th or 1 1/16th . be sure to teflon tape the threads on the new one . its only a small PITA to change . be careful of the plastic disconnect on it . hope this helps .

The best thing to do would be to hook up a new or known good mechanical pressure gauge and bring the engine up to temperature. Then there is no doubt as to whether or not the factory gauge system is working properly.
I have seen this several times, and it has never been the gauge that was failed. In all cases it was caused by excessive main bearing clearance. When the oil is cold it is thick enough that it allows the oil system to build pressure. When the oil heats up the volume required to keep pressure exceeds the oil system's ability to pump oil and the pressure drops, usually to just a few psi.
In other words, double check your gauge with something else but start planning on rebuilding or replacing the engine.

your sender and press switch nay be one unit screwed in right above the oil filter. itwill have 3 wires on the connector.
