Pointed at the timing mark on the balancer when the piston is exactly at TDC. You'll need a degree wheel and a piston stop to find the exact TDC.

Re: 12 oclock balancer???? tab????

If the heads are on, it's a device that screws into the spark plug hole and has a hole through the center to allow the air in the cylinder to come out. You take out the #1 spark plug and insert the tool. Take both rockers of on the #1 cylinder or the valves will hit the stop. Using a degree wheel, you bar the engine over by hand until the piston hits the stop. Take a reading off the degree wheel then rotate the engine in the opposite direction until the piston hits the stop again. Take a reading off the degree wheel. Remove the piston stop. Calculate half way between the 2 readings and bar the engine over until you're at that new reading. #1 piston is now exactly at TDC. Install a timing pointer to point directly at the mark on the balancer.

If the heads are off, you still need to do the rotations with a degree wheel but a simple piston stop is a flat piece of thick metal bolted to the deck with a short bolt going through it into the cylinder.

If you don't know when the #1 piston is at TDC, blindly installing a timing pointer will only give you a guess at the timing. Years ago I installed an adjustable pointer and was wondering why my car kept going faster when my timing was well above 40*. My pointer was 8* out. What I thought was 38* when I started was only 30*. By the time I bumped the timing to 46*, the engine was actually at 38* and running better.

yea went to the track last night. and made few runs tune the car. start with timing. here what i got! base timing 10 total 34 run a 14.266 @ 96 90% throttle base 25 run a 14.085 @ 98.03 90% throttle base 33 run a 13.764 at 99.56 90% throttle one more run like that one 13.760 at 99.84 found out the gas was not opening all the way fixed that run two more time and run 13.46x at 102.xx and 13.482 @ 102.97 so tdc aint right huh

Re: 12 oclock balancer???? tab????

The timing tab on a 12:00 position setup is welded to the timing cover and is seen by looking straight down behind the water pump.

Re: 12 oclock balancer???? tab????

i mean the mark on the balancer is close to inline with the key way. where wood the pointer be at ? 12 or 2 oclock pointer

Re: 12 oclock balancer???? tab????

That's normal. The timing mark on the balancer is always inline with the keyway. When #1 cylinder is at TDC, the timing mark is more in the 1-2 o'clock position if you had the timing chain cover off to see the timing marks on the gears lined up.

Re: 12 oclock balancer???? tab????

On a 1:30 postion balancer the timing line will be CCW from the keyway by about 10-15 degrees. On a 12:00 position balancer it will be CCW from the keyway by about 40-45*. Eyeball approximations here, obviously, but the two are clearly and obviously different from eachother at a casual glance.
