Do i need a fan?

1987 bird w/ olds 307 V8...

there is simply no way I can make my current electric fan and the stock-waterpump pully fan setup would not have enough room either...so...

I can either buy a smaller (less deep) electric fan, or just not have a fan...

I removed the thermostat, so that might help keep it cool a little better...

do you think a fan is necessary? Obviously it would not be an issue for higher speed driving but stop and go city driving might hurt

Re: Do i need a fan?

yeah if you do city driving a fan is very necessary. it will overheat rather quickly.

Re: Do i need a fan?

yeah you need your fans. I fired my car up 1 day and let it idle for like 15mins while I was fixing things and didnt relize my fans were not working and the motor got extremly hot...I looked and all my hoses were about to burst. SO yeah I would think your fans would be a good idea.

Re: Do i need a fan?

Does it matter what size fan I get?

I have a V6 bird fan right now, that is too deep and will not fit...

Can I just get any random electric fan?

well any fan is better than no fan. i would get what i could find and use it for a temp fix untill you find a good fan that fits.

Re: Do i need a fan?

car is not "street-worthy" right now so I guess I have some time...

However, if a V6 fan does not fit in there, I will probably have to find some dinky fan that will fit...oh well

Re: Do i need a fan?

you could buy an aftermarket pusher fan. AKA one that mounts in front of the radiator.

Perma cool makes good ones, a few of em push 2900 CFM through the radiator.

I would look into that.

1987 bird w/ olds 307 V8...
the olds 307 still used a non-electric fan...I currently have the 87 2.8 v6 fan and a 91 v8 firebird radiator...

How about this...can you mount any fan in front of the radiator?...if it will fit

Re: Do i need a fan?

Stick your head under the nose and look up you will notice alot of room infront of the radiatior.

Just get a pusher fan and put it there.

Re: Do i need a fan?

I'm not familiar with a "pusher" fan but what is the difference between that and a regular fan?

Could I not just mount my stock fan in front of the radiator?

Re: Do i need a fan?

yeah you could do that to, it should work just as good as a real pusher fan. i am not really sure what the difference would be between pusher/puller. i would try that and see if it works.

idk if a stock fan can be a pusher, i think its all in the pitch of the blades, or which way they spin.

Theres 2 types of fans pushers and pullers

pullers mount behind the radiator and pull air through the radiator, were as a pusher is in front of the radiatror and pushes air through the radiator. most stock fans can only be mounted behind the radiator, so im pretty sure yours wont work as a pusher.

electric fans are cheap, I would go and buy a pusher fan, better safe then sorry, even for a budget build, the cooling system is NOTHING to skimp on.

HELPFUL LINKS
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...81536_-1_10117

Thats the jegs electric fan, with dif style blades to make it a pusher or puller(your choice just put it where you want it)

get no less than 1500 CFM, buy the fan and relay kit install it, and kiss this problem goodbye.

Re: Do i need a fan?

would it be different? if you think about it they are the same. puller fans still push air out.

Re: Do i need a fan?

I mounted the stock firebird fan in front of the radiator...

to do so i had to remove the x-thin support bars, central vertical lower radiator support and the front nose middle support...

the nose is flimsy but I'm gonna rig up some new supports anyways...

car is almost done...just need to check the timing and fuel because it runs bad at high rpm

well thats why you should have just bought a pusher fan, there smaller then bulky stock ones, and dont make you sacrifice ridigty.

cant always build them right I guess. thats kinda like keeping pressed in studs in high performance engines

Wow, this is one of the less intelligent posts I have read on this board. The fan is NOT there just for show.

Re: Do i need a fan?

I fitted an electric "puller" fan from a Vauxhall (European car) to my Camaro and it worked as a "pusher". You just have to make sure the fan will work in reverse, as some will not.
